LXXXI – IT’S OFFICIAL!

Announced live yesterday at San Diego Comicon β€” the original Marvel Transformers comic series (cancelled back in 1991 at issue #80) is being continued by IDW Publishing, thanks in large part to an online fan petition (big shouts for Luke and Ron of the IDW forums) and the tireless efforts of IDW EiC Chris Ryall. Transformers (‘classic’) will (re-) launch in Spring 2012 with issue 80 and a half, and reunites the previous writer/artist team of myself and Andrew Wildman. The reinvigorated run will build to a monumental 100th issue conclusion, pulling together and tying up every dangling plotline you can think of and a whole lot you can’t! What else can I tell you about the series? Nada. Niente. Zilch. So don’t ask. For the time being anyway we’re keeping this tightly under wraps. But it is going to shatter your trousers! Guaranteed!

  1. I wondered why you’d been so quiet on the TF front lately! πŸ˜‰

Fantastic stuff, can’t wait for this – hopefully see you at AA!

Congrats to the WildFur boys! πŸ˜€

  2. Franco says:

    Yes!
I’ll finally go back to buy single issues of a comic book! It’s been so long since Maximum Dinobots.

  3. Franco says:

By the way, we’re going to further promote this new series with a special surprise πŸ™‚

  4. A “100th issue conclusion”? Seems we have to start a new petition for an issue #101 right away. πŸ˜‰

Congratulations on the continuation – to both you and us.

  5. Peter Hodgson says:

Are we also getting Stephen on inks again for a few issues? Can’t wait for #80.1 then #81-100. By the time we get to #100 – we might have James & Nick maybe planning on taking over – but depends on how their own series goes. {they’s love to do the Marvel comic]

  6. 0r1n says:

    AAAAAAaaaaaaaawwwesome!

  7. kriscarter says:

Simon, GREAT news to see this happen! FANPOWER!!!! All you need to do now is make a continuation that doesn’t enrage the fan community at large. Simples!

  8. Ola Wikander says:

Yes! I’ve been longing and hoping for this so much! Wonderful!

  9. Peter Hodgson says:

Kris – any chance you can pester Chris & John to let you colour a cover? We’ve nothing to worry about the comic – just remember his names not shane. Simon’s got lots of stuff to pick up from the last 5 issues of Marvel. Which he did cover in G2. Also – amazing we have Andrew Wildman back on Transformers. But this time we get to see his strip work as drawn not like at DW. Light colouring best suits Andrew’s detailed art. [another hitn for getting Kris for strip colourist too]

    • kriscarter says:

Peter: I would beg, borrow and steal to get to work on this project – it would be an absolute dream. πŸ™‚ I’ve let IDW know of course…. but if anyone else would like to throw some support for me their way, that’d be a huge help! Either way, I’m just chuffed this is actually happening!

  10. I am so looking forward to what will be done . I hope you will deal with that is Prime the real Prime or just a copy ,cause of the events of issue #24 .I am glad to hear about Andy ,and hope for Stephen Baskerville .Also will we see some of the 1991 -1992 characters ,will Grimlock be an Action Master ?.Will it lead up to G2 or will that be a different universe? What about the Neo-Knights ,can you use them ,will you ? Well i guess i will see ,either way i know it will be grand .:~)

  11. Keith Cooper says:

This is fantastic news – all the TF comic news coming out of SDCC has me really pumped up for them now. Big congratulations to the guys that ran the petition, and really looking forward to seeing what Simon and Andy have in store for us. One huge request – please, please acknowledge the UK Marvel stories in the new comics! The original 332 issue series, combining the US and UK stories is my number one TF continuity, over everything else, and it would be hard to include issue 81-100 in that if it doesn’t acknowledge the UK stuff at least tangentially and keeping it in continuity (IDW are reprinting it all, so there’s no excuse for readers not familiar with the UK stories not to be able to get their hands on the material). Anyway, great news and well done to Simon, Andy, the petition organisers and everyone who supported it! Can’t wait!

  12. Luke says:

Amazing news! So glad you’re given 20 issues off the bat to tell an epic tale. It’s much more than many people thought might happen!!!

  13. Hans says:

Congratulations! Great news, and I’ll be picking it up for sure, just like in the 1980’s (and early 1990’s).

I really do hope that Stephen Baskerville will join in as well. His inks did wonderful things with Andy’s pencils, they were a fantastic team.

  14. DJ_Convoy says:

    My trousers! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  15. Ralph Burns says:

I am tremendously excited by this news and frankly I cannot wait! It is so exciting to have the seminal run of Transformers having new issues published again!

I hope for variants numbers for UK fans too. I need a #333!

Brilliant news, best of luck with it.

  16. I’m brimming with excitment for this! Congratulations to you and Mr Wildman, Simon.

  17. Congratulations Simon… the fans have spoken, and IDW have listened. It’ll be great to see the team of Furman and Wildman again… can’t wait :o)

  18. Rob says:

Are you planning on tying into the UK events and inconsistencies, or just the US stuff?

  19. Karl Thurgood says:

This is wonderful news. I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed about this for a while now (which makes all the typing I do in my job quite difficult), great to hear that not only is it happening but it is a longer run that I could have hoped for.

I am greatly looking forward to this – the Marvel comics run is what I automatically think of when anyone says Transformers, so a continuation is fantastic news.

  20. Vince says:

I’d like to congratulate Simon Furman and Andrew Wildman personally. I’ve literally waited years for this news. I remember when generation 2 was canceled i was so upset I personally boycotted all of Marvels stuff. To this day I won’t buy anything they put out. This is a true victory for everyone who was involved with this movement. I will support this book as long as it runs, hopefully beyond issue 100.

  21. Nigel Mably says:

I’m so pleased to see this confirmed, though I had little doubt that it would be.

I’d like to echo the calls for Stephen Baskerville on inking duty; he and Andrew Wildman remain my favourite pencil/ink pairing to this day. Is Andrew booked for the full twenty issues? I ask because I would also love to see Guido Guidi and especially Simon Williams do some work on the title.

Please, please, please don’t tie up all the loose ends. Please leave a few doors open. I don’t like the idea of this particular Transformers universe being made wholly finite. After all, it never ends.

  22. J. J. Ulm says:

I could not be more excited! No offense to the current books, but the original comic book series was always my One True Canon. I may even have to go back to picking up my books on Wednesdays.

So you can take back Nightbeat’s G2 death now, right? πŸ™‚

  23. Marc Graham says:

Congratulations – looking forward to more good stuff from your good self and Mr Wildman

  24. BB Shockwave says:

All I have to say, is…. WOW! I never thought I’d see the day. The favourite comic of my childhood, something I practically grew up with… Finally gets a proper ending!

Looking forward to see whatever happened to Shockwave and Galvatron II, and how the mind-link between Ratchet and Megatron might come in place later…

  25. Paul Cannon says:

I just can’t express how happy this news makes me πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Wonderful, WONDERFUL news!!!

  26. Donald aka HMRC4EVR says:

    Wow, this is GREAT news!

I’m just really hoping that we can get some closure to the Neo Knights (even if Circuit Breaker won’t be available 😦 ). I always wondered what would have happend to them after issue 80 and since the Neo Knights limited series didn’t come out, it was a rather depressing ending for a team that had such potenti.

To everyone involved THANK YOU for all your hard work in getting this done! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

  27. Jon Steele says:

Excellent news, will be buying this for sure! Just need to get Geoff Senior and Lee Sullivan to do some variant covers and I will fork out even more cash!!

  28. Thunder says:

So, after #100 no more issues? Or is that to be determined later? Also, please keep the fan writers and artists off this book–I want pure Furman and Wildman. πŸ™‚

  29. Stephen Kelly says:

2 words – GEOFF SENIOR! Please try involve Geoff in some way on this, I grew up reading the UK transformers comics and your work with Andy and Geoff was amazing!
I will echo some of the thoughts here and state that i`ll be returning to buying single issue comics just for this! (will also buy up the graphic novels)

Can I be really greedy and ask for a continuation of Dragon`s Claws?:-)

  30. Luke Barnett says:

Seems like from what Ryall has said they’ve locked in #80.5-100 as the run. While I’m sure people would love to see this as an indefinite ongoing, I’m mighty pleased it’s guaranteed a long run! Much better than. 4 issue mini to test the waters.

  31. Darragh says:

Excellent news! I echo calls for Geoff Senior, if he’s willing and available, to do some work on this series. While I enjoy Wildman’s work, Senior’s my definitive TF artist.

  32. @ says:

Its funny T TFCC gave us a post issue 80 universe. I guess this will be the THIRD one after that.

  33. Hans says:

    Hi Simon,

It was great talking to you this weekend in Germany! Hope you are safely back in the UK, all the rain made it quite a trip driving back to the Netherlands…

Thanks for answering all our questions. Let’s hope Geoff has some free time left in his busy schedule πŸ˜‰

  34. David "The Last Autobot" says:

    Hello Mr Furman:

We are all expecting the day when we finally read issue 81!!!

Just please donΒ΄t kill The Last Autobot!!! πŸ™‚

  35. Akira says:

I am really looking forward to this!!
    Cant wait to read it.

  36. Forester says:

I just hope this doesn’t invalidate G2 entirely. I really liked that series. :-/

  37. The best thing is this time i won’t have to persuade my mum to buy it for me

  38. Rubicon says:

    Awesome news, can’t wait!!!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed issue 100 leads into G2 and the G.I. Joe crossover. Those issues should still count for something.

  39. Excitemennnnnnt!

I’ve never been so pleased to hear news about a comic book. Never. I have only a few things I would add to my wish list…

    1) Geoff Senior, Staz and Lee Sullivan to do (at least) alternate covers. I’d add Jeff Anderson but I believe he’s a man of the cloth these days (still…)

    2) The prospect of continuing beyond #100

    3) A letters page hosted by a Transformer

    4) A UK edition (weekly with b/w UK strips thrown in)

    5) The Moon on a stick

    • Luke says:

100% behind this one – This HAS to happen (it won’t, I know, UK comics for kids are seriously lacking nowadays)!!!

  40. Ethan Shuster says:

Yes, that is a good question. WILL this factor in the Generation 2 series, considering Mr. Furman wrote that one as well??

  41. Gaz says:

It would be good to have a weekly UK one as well, get us up to issue 400. HEHE. But maybe that’s just greedy.

  42. SEan says:

Please please please include the final showdown between Magnus and Galvatron. Even if it has to be Magnus vs Galvatron 2. Really looking forward to this. Please don’t go on a killing spree.
