Here we go again, with a post-game (but pre-release) ramble on the latest issue of Transformers: Regeneration One to hit the stands (#89 is out next Wednesday, March 13th — lucky for almost everyone I’d say). As usual, my free form digressions into content and behind-the-scenes process on any given issue come with a capacity for spoilers, though I do try to tease more than outright reveal, so be warned. Stop now. Here. Proceed no further, if you’re the least bit concerned about such energy saving reveals, otherwise proceed… So, the penultimate chapter of the ‘Natural Selection’ arc, and things are about as bad as they can get. For Grimlock, in way, way too deep, even for him, and for his fellow Dinobots (Snarl, Swoop and Sludge) too. In fact, that trio of Dinobots (somewhat ignored since #86, and then seen only in flashback or dream-sequence) take centre stage here. Still at large in Scorponok’s new Iacon (with its more murderously inclined population), but only just. And guess what? They’re not the least bit happy about their commander’s alliance with Scorponok, whatever his ultimate motivations, to the point where the thing that’s uppermost in their minds is not so much survival, as putting their own house in order. Grimlock has defied ‘the code’, and that’s the biggest Dinobot ‘no, no’ of all. No happy endings are assured here. What else? Well, a whole lot actually. In the very core of Cybertron, Hot Rod faces an impossible choice, and learns the faith-testing truth about the entire Transformers race. Optimus Prime embarks on a mission to clear Earth of any remaining possible dangers (of Cybertronian origin), a task that sets him on a collision course with the Ark’s current inhabitants, and where we learn more about last issue’s ‘shock’ revelation. Plus, Ultra Magnus and the Autobots are on the home leg of their long journey back from Earth, unaware that the reception in Iacon is likely to be warm… in all the wrong ways!  UPDATE: The official IDW preview of #89 is now live, here, and so is the official Transformers facebook page, where there’s now a Q&A with me up, which (while still RG1-centric) is more about the writing process than the content.

  1. I think this is my favorite cover of the series yet.

  2. Tankorr says:

Can’t wait to read about Hot Rod’s choice and cybertronian mythology *_*

  3. Darren says:

Very much looking forward to seeing Shockwave in action.

Just a couple of questions please Simon if that’s ok. Here in the UK we first saw Primus back in issue 150 when you wrote The Legacy of Unicron in 1988 we all saw he resembled Hot Rod. Was this always the intention even then or just the way Jeff Anderson drew him and the idea came from there?

Is Scorponok only targeting Iacon or the whole of Cybertron?

Is Krok still a high ranking Decepticon with Bludgeon?

Will we get to see Skyquake and the Predators?

Once again well done to the team and keep up the great work.

    • simon furman says:

Re: Primus. It’s less Primus resembles Hot Rod and more Hot Rod resembles Primus. More on that as we accelerate towards #100.
Re: Scorponok. The whole of Cybertron, as by now (if you’ve read the whole of #89) will be clear.
Re: Krok. Still with Bludgeon. He’ll feature in #94/95.
Re; Skyquake. There’s every chance he’ll show up.

      • Darren says:

Thanks for replying Simon. Looking forward to finding this out with Hod Rod. This is a great issue and its set up well for the last part next month. Can’t believe we’re almost half way through now.

Fantastic that Krok will be back. I hope Skyquake will make an appearance. One thing you were always good at is introducing new characters, at Hasbro’s insistance, into an on going story. Most of the European toys at the end never got the chance to feature in the original comic because it finished so it would be good to see a few of them pop up every so often.

Thanks again & please pass on thanks to the whole team on the fantastic job everyone is doing.

  4. Dave Grew says:

Wow cant wait to read this. The bit that excites me the most is – “Optimus Prime embarks on a mission to clear Earth of any remaining possible dangers, a task that sets him on a collision course with the Ark’s current inhabitants”

  5. Lukas says:

I can’t wait to read this. Dinobots vs. Grimmy, Optimus vs Big Three and another part of Hot Roddy’s journey, which is, in my opinion, the best strand of this story arc so far. And the icing on the cake – Magnus& the team on time to the party. Nice 🙂

I thought new army of Scorponok’s is a bunch of lunatics walking around and destroying everything, but nope, they seem to follow their new leader and are clear#present danger for the Autobots. The last issue of this story also looks promising. Can’t wait for it..

One thing is bothering me.. How it’s possible to change good Bot to evil Con so easily. There where just four guys coming from Nebulos who ran the chaos in Iacon…

    • simon furman says:

The gene key unlocks the darker side of each Cybertronian’s personality, and then takes morality and accountability out of the question. Scorponok is just directing that to his own ends. Not everyone has chosen to necessarily follow Scorp. Some are just into random mayhem.

      • Lukas says:

Thx for your background thoughts SImon. I’ve also noticed that some of the “genekeynised” characters are walking free destroying everything and listen to nobody (Skyhammer, Overdrive). Interesting idea.

I’m also curious how those four guys (Grimmy, Hardhead, Brainstorm and Highbrow) could take so many Bots by surprise and altered. First few guys could be in shock seeing back-from-dead brothers, but how on Earth could those four surprised almost whole population of Iacon’s? That’s kinda mysterious for me.

  6. Ian Hewett says:

It’s that time of the month again, so to speak. As the series progresses, it seems to sit on the fence between a direct continuation of the original series and something new altogether, something which works surprisingly well. I’m enjoying every minute of it.
Will we learn why Chromedome’s not amongst Scorponok’s Headmaster cadre, and what happened to the other Decepticon heads on Nebulos (and in the case of surviving Headmasters like Weirdwolf and Skullcruncher, what happens when two versions of the same character meet)? Speaking of missing team members, Swoop wasn’t mentioned… Will he be showing up any time soon?!
Looking forward to the preview, and the issue proper. I can’t believe we’re now that close to the end…

  7. Kent says:

    Excited as always!

  8. I can’t wait!

Just a quick question Simon. I am a HUGE fan of Geoff Senior. He is doing a great job with the incentive covers. Is there any chance of him drawing an issue of Regeneration One? The issues he drew like Target 2006 from the UK weekly and #75 of the American series were epic. I would love to see him draw another Magnus vs. Galvatron battle or if Unicron comes into this series again.

The series is awesome and I hope it continues for a long time.

    • IIRC Simon said a while back that Galvatron and Ultra Magnus would fall afoul of each other at some point in the Regeneration One storyline.

I don’t think G Senior would want to commit to a full return to panel art duties, but who knows? He’s pure quality at scenes of hand-to-hand combat (a la the aforementioned two in Target 2006).

Personally I’m very pleased with Regen1 so far. I just hope that Grimlock puts Scorponok in his place sooner rather than later!

      • simon furman says:

Geoff is a very busy guy. Mostly with his own advertising art agency, Smudge Pencil. But plans are afoot to get him more involved… but no promises.

  9. Even though I have had a few issues with the series ,it is really turning out good .The art has been getting better and better ,and so has the story .So I would just like to say to you ,Andy ,Stephen ,and John … excellent work . I would really love to see Sky Lynx ,and what has happened to Nightbeat ? Also I believe I have asked this before (I know I did when we met in 1990 ) but was he ever a “HeadMaster” in the series ? I know he was as an Action Figure ,but I know that “with you ” that does not always apply to the character in your stories .

  10. Looking forward to it, as always!

  11. Tankorr says:

The preview contains a major revelation: the decepticon gene was created by Primus? This is a deeply turnover from the classic G2 origin of evil (the unforeseen spawn of Leige Maximo)!!

So Primus itself created the rational basis of the civil war.

and more: Hot Rod finds a sword and the covenant. Violence and Knowledge….maybe the 2 artifacts was left back to guide -respectively- autobots and decepticons? (Maybe a Prime and a Maximo??)

I don’t know where this subplot will take us, but it is very VERY interesting!

    • simon furman says:

The idea is, Primus created free will. Whether that was a good idea or not is part of what RG1 will address as it moves towards #100. Self-determination versus rigid control is a big part of the whole story.

  12. Jim Semonik says:

Just read the issue. SPOILERS!!! So Shockwave hooked himself up eh? The Prime introspection was good and the Cybertronian history was cool to see, though I think the readers basically know this stuff already. The art is just getting better and better. The colors are awesome. This wasn’t my favorite issue as I’m not a huge Dinobot fan and I hope they side step the series after this arc. Galvatron seems like he is gonna nuke Cybertron. More of him please! I just hope Scorponok survives. I’d hate to see him come back only to be killed again. Since him and Prime were so close in the old series toward the end, I was hoping they would somehow meet up again so Prime could see the differences in Scorp. Also, will we actually get to see Thunderwing live again? Anyway, Simon. Thanks for another issue!

  13. Sean says:

The issue left me with no real feeling about it emotionally. More of the same. This arc has given us all the set up, and now were at the end, just…like…the…first…arc. I will flip out if Scorponok dies in a story where he pretty much did nothing except stand around, and be apart of a story that never really got moving until it’s end. He went out the first time like a champ. If he goes down now falling down a shaft or whatever, he should never have been brought back. Same bot who had a great storyline in the original run, great character moments, great fight with Shockwave, and a great death. I hope he doesn’t die. Hot Rods story is interesting, though I hope there is more to it then, “Oh, so I have to kill all the first cybertronians. Ok.” What else happened. Prime went for a ride to the Ark. Shockwave is showing signs of life. He’s making progress story wise, his eye did glow. He might flinch by next issue. Galvatron is…..not doing anything. Starscream is…..not doing anything. All bitching aside, after 10 issues of set up,I really can’t see how things can suffer from slow storyline progression in the next 10. Just no way. Just no way. Mathematically the next 10 should be on par with your original run.

    • simon furman says:

Curious you think Scorponok’s done/accomplished nothing by this point. He’s done what no Decepticon leader has ever done (or at least not at any recent point in time) and conquered the whole of Iacon (and is about to conquer the whole of Cybertron).

      • Sean says:

Yes he’s accomplished what the story demands he acoomplish to add weight to the whole thing. I’m saying HE hasn’t DONE anything. Him personally as a character. Every time we’ve seen him he’s standing in place talking about stuff he’s gonna do. Not to mention he’s just about the conquer CYBERTRON…………in the 5th and finale issue of the arc. I wonder what’s gonna happen? Seeing him do stuff and be bad ass may have helped his character arc a bit don’t you think? Instead no he gets to fight and possibly die at the end of said story. Maybe he’ll live, and if there is anything right with the world he will. A weak story befitting a great character. A great charcter you yourself made great. Astonishing. Oh, and will Galvatron ever move away from the computer console? He’s been there for 3 issues. He’s been staring at the same screen for 3 issues. IF that doesn’t prove slow storyline progression what does? Your better than the stuff your writing Simon. I have 4 trades of the original Marvel run and numerous UK stories to prove it. Still read them even now. IF I were to go back in time and bring back the man who wrote those stories and bring him back here, no doubt he’d slap the hell out of you.

  14. Lukas says:

Disappointing a little bit.. I hoped to see more of Shockwave (today’s actions), Prime vs Galvatron and also war between altered Bots and rest of guys.
The result of the Dinobot war was pretty predictable..

Fortunately Hot Rod and his time travel to the Cybetronian’s past saves the day a little. It;s the best part of whole of this story arc. But still, it’s too little of action in here, I mean in this #89.

I hope that next issue will sweep me off my feet. Everything is set to the grande finale, but.. we’ll see..

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for this series which brings me some memos.

  15. simon furman says:

Wow, Sean, where do you get off coming on here, my personal blog, and slagging me off like this? I’m sorry, but I’d rather you didn’t post here any more. I don’t need your venom. I welcome criticism but not bile like this. Go vent your spleen somewhere else.

  16. Jim Semonik says:

DUUUUDE! Just saw the cover of 92. Mind blown. Carnivac and Snarler? Really? SO AWESOME. Not seen them since 51. One question…who is the jet? That’s not T wing is it? Also, kudos for your last comment. Glad to see you stand up to the rudeness.
Is this the “Mayhem Attack Squad” on the cover. Also BLASTER!

    • Lukas says:

I also saw this. Looks like the cover from classic Marvel UK (“Survivors”). Promising one.
Is this Thunderwing who flies behind Carnivac&Snarler?

  17. Darragh says:

Optimus Prime versus Galvatron? Yes, please!

  18. Paul says:

Hi Simon, back in the original run when Grimlock revived the Dinobots they scanned earth for any signs of Transformer life. They on Transformer thay fould was in two parts in to different locations. Who and what was this? It couldn’t have been Fortress Maximus since he was on the ark. So, is this an unfinished plot? Or was it resolved and I (somehow) missed it?

If I ask nicely will you not kill off Optimus? I am kind of getting tired of him dying in everything. Can’t the guy just get a break for a few hundred years?

    • Brent says:

I remember thinking they scanned the Ark, which was abandoned since Primus called all of the active TransFormers in the vicinity to Cynertron, and that the life they scanned was “MegaRatchet”, since Megatron and Rachet now shared the same physiology, but were separated by Fixit. But I could be wrong. That’s just how I always read it.

  19. Paul says:

Ugh, This time in English. The only transformer that they found was in two parts in two different locations. Who and What was this?

    • Darren says:

This was Spike Witwicky wasn’t it? He was part Fortress Maximus, shared a mind, and then there was the helmet he needed to transform into the head of Cerebros. He wouldn’t have carried it around with him so the scan picked up two signals. At least that’s how I’ve understood it.

  20. Bloodrose says:

Simon, a question about the Q&A. You mention you had to include two modernizations: thinking in TPB archs and gettin rid of thought bubbels. None of them are too big deals, but I started to wonder, how much of a taboo is a thought bubble these days in the indurtry. If a writer wants to use them for whatever reason, does he have the chance, or they are strictly forbidden? (Actually I don’t even know why they were banned in the first place…)

  21. Bass X0 says:

Yes, I too am wondering about thought bubbles too. Maybe its ‘taboo’ to have a literal thought bubble as they used to appear, but many modern comics, such as those from Marvel, have thought captions. I’ve always felt that thought bubbles/captions add a lot of characterisation to a comic in situations where it wouldn’t make sense for the character to actually say their thoughts out loud.

  22. Thanks for the reply Simon! As Puffing mentioned Geoff’s hand to hand/major battles are great. My favorite cover he has done so far for Regen is the one with Megatron/Springer. The creative team on Regeneration One has done a great job that after all these years that this series fits right in with the original G1 series. Storyline, art, covers, etc.

Maybe similar to the US G1 series Geoff could pencil an occasional issue. Back then it seemed to be timed for major action issues. Like the end of Matrix Quest, #75, and the end of G2.

Scorponok is a good villain but the direction seems to be heading towards the big 4 leaders being front and center. Optimus, Ultra Magnus, Galvatron, Shockwave.

I don’t really count Rodimus as by the G1 rules he can’t really appear the same time as Hot Rod. Unless we have more time travel..  Thunderwing would be another great choice to bring back as the Matrix Quest G1 storyline made him one of the most feared Decepticons.

Megatron is the other one missing but I am betting he is not dead. Maybe having one show up from an alternate dimension like Galvatron. You did a great job involving time travel/alternate dimensions in the UK Weekly/G1.

If Geoff might pencil an issue we would definitely love to see him do one with some major battles between these characters.

BTW I had my letter printed in issue #57 of the original US G1 series asking them to bring in yourself and the other UK creative team/storylines in to the US book and it happened that same issue! I had a friend ship me over all of the UK weeklies since 1986. 

Again, keep up the great work and thanks to everyone involved for bringing the G1 storyline back!

  23. Bass_X0 says:

I’m still concerned about the lack of Buster Witwicky. It would be wrong to not bring him back.

  24. Kent says:

I can’t believe we are almost half way through all this. Its not fair. This series should run at least another 80 issues! Is unicron coming back for prime?
